The Governors Highway Safety Office gave this award to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department for 0 fatality related vehicle crashes for 2012.

Vehicle seized during the traffic stop from Michigan.

On 12-19-2012 Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw, Deputy Greg Sims and Special Deputy Jason Hanley made a traffic stop on a vehicle from Michigan. During the traffic stop high grade marijuana was discovered as well as a large quantity of prescription narcotics. During the investigation Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw discovered that the man from Michigan has been shipping hundreds of pills a month to a residence in Van Buren County. 1 person from Michigan has been arrested and more arrest are expected to come. Wardlaw seized a 2002 Ford F150 as well as US currency.

On December 7, 2012 three desks were donated to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department. Chief Deputy Vandagriff was notifed by Tom Wright, the Assistant Director of the Regional Organized Crime Information Center in Nashville, that the slightly experienced desks were available if we could use them. Michael Sullivan, a Corrections Officer with the jail, went to Nashville and obtained them from the center. We do appreciate the desks and thank Mr. Wright for the generous donation. They were greatly needed.

On Wednesday December 5, 2012 the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit received a generous donation of an E Collar from Vest Indiana K9s. This donation will provide the help needed to further K9 Ello’s performance. Vest Indiana K9s was founded by Patti Olesen in August of 2011. She has also recently begun the Vest Ohio K9s Organization. Since 2011 Vest Indiana has donated Ballistic Vests, Cooling Vests, Patrol Harnesses, E Collars and Trauma kits to over 30 K9 teams from several states. These states include but are not limited to IN, OH, AZ, NE, and TN. Patti “P Dog” Olesen hold Fund Raisers and also reaches out for donations from numerous contacts. Patti has a Full Time job, a loving Husband and one son. She uses all of her “free” time to get K9 teams equipment that is needed at no cost to the Department. Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw cannot express enough gratitude to Vest Indiana K9s as well as Vest Ohio K9s. On 11-15-2012 Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw, K9 Ello, Deputy Jody O'Dell and Deputy Steve Evans searched a residence in Van Buren County after receiving information about illegal drugs. During the investigation Marijuana was found as well as paraphernalia that had been attempted to be destroyed. Wardlaw did arrest 5 suspects who were booked into the Van Buren County Jail. The court date for all suspects was set for 11-29-2012. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Halloween safety tips for motorists and parents of trick-or-treaters. For motorists: •Slow down and watch for children. •Be alert when pulling out of driveways. •Watch for children running out from behind parked cars, bushes and shrubs. •Do not pass vehicles that have stopped in the roadway as they may be dropping off children. •Do not put a Halloween mask on until after you park your car. •Do not drink and drive. Designate a sober driver. For parents: •Accompany children at all times. •Teach children to stop, look to the left, the right and to the left again before crossing the street. •Instruct children to stay on the sidewalk and cross only at corners and crosswalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. •Use a flashlight and were reflective strips on your clothing. •Make sure masks do not obstruct vision or hearing and that costumes do not impede walking ability. •Walk-do not run-across the street or from house to house.

The Sheriff’s Department would like to clarify that on 10-15-12 James Darrell Shockley age 57 of Spencer was arrested on charges of burglary of an automobile, theft of property over $500, and Vandalism over $500. James Dean Shockley of Bledsoe County was not arrested.

On 10-20-12 Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw received information from the Grundy County Sheriff's Department about a residence in Van Buren County that may contain marijuana. Investigator Wardlaw searched the residence and seized items associated with the Manufacture of Marijuana. U.S. Currency and approximately 1 pound of processed Marijuana was also taken from the residence.

On 10-20-2012 Narcotics Investigator Connor Wardlaw seized this vehicle from an individual who resides in Cumberland County. Since the arrest and seizure the suspect is being held by ICE.

On October 15, 2012 James Shockley was arrested and charged with Burglary of an Automobile, Vandalism over $500, and Theft of Property over $500. Mr. Shockley was arrested after DNA from a broken window in the vehicle was matched with his DNA. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WINDS OF 25 TO 39 MPH AND/OR GUSTS OF 35 TO 57 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.

On Oct. 10, 2012 Brandon Brownell, 23 years old, of Mt. Juliet TN was indicted for the charge of Rape of a Child. Mr. Brownell was booked into the Van Buren County Jail and did post a $75,000.00 bond. This did occur a the Fall Creek Falls camping area on 07-23-2012. The Department of Childrens Services as well as Investigator Connor Wardlaw did an in depth investigation. The child in this case was 5 years old. The victim and suspect are not related and did not know eachother prior to meeting at the Camp Ground. Sheriff Grayson Beasley wants to remind parents to always be aware of who is around your child and please do not hesitate to call the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office if you suspect any type of abuse. 931-946-4000

K-9 Ello and Deputy Wardlaw recently visited the Spencer Elementary School where Ello showed the kids all the things he has learned in his training.
