Happy Halloween! As you head out to trick-or-treat tonight, remember these safety tips: 1) Carry flashlights or glow sticks and try to wear bright colors 2) Travel in groups or with a parent 3) Always check both ways before crossing the street; try to use sidewalks and crosswalks where available 4) Have an adult check all candy before eating 5) If you are driving in the area please drive slow and watch out for children that may quickly come into the roadway The VAPD hopes everyone has a safe and happy Halloween! Just a reminder, Saturday, October 27th from 10am - 2pm is the drug take back program. This will be done at the Van Alstyne Police Department.

...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR EASTERN GRAYSON COUNTY UNTIL 630 PM CDT... At 537 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Sherman, moving north at 30 mph. Wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm. Locations impacted include... Sherman, Denison, Van Alstyne, Howe, Pottsboro, Whitewright, Bells, Tom Bean, Knollwood, Eisenhower State Park, southeastern Lake Texoma and Luella. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

We had a great turnout at our annual Community Night Out last night and I enjoyed getting the opportunity to interact with our community. The Van Alstyne Police Department had the privilege of being part of the escort for the Eyes of Freedom Memorial to Grayson County College this afternoon. According to the GCC website the memorial begins today and end Saturday at 3pm.

Fall Clean Up 2018 for Precinct 1

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a * Flood Advisory for Minor Flooding in Poor Drainage Areas for... Collin County in north central Texas... Southeastern Grayson County in north central Texas... Western Fannin County in north central Texas... * Until 830 PM CDT. * At 625 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms that were producing heavy rainfall from Plano to Denison and moving east. Excessive runoff from these thunderstorms will cause minor flooding. Areas that are low lying or usually experience poor drainag are most likely to experience flooding. This means some low water crossings in the region may become impassible. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen. * Some locations that will experience flooding include... Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Richardson, Allen, Wylie, Sherman, Denison, Sachse, Bonham, Murphy, Prosper, Royse City, Anna, Fairview, Princeton, Celina, Lucas, Parker and Farmersville. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and lowl lying spots.

The Grayson County Health Department has advised that a west nile positive mosquito was trapped in the City of Van Alstyne. As a safety precaution the City has contracted with Noble Resources Pest Control to ground fog beginning at 9:00pm Tuesday, September 18, 2018 and again at 9:00pm Wednesday, September 19, 2018. This will continue for several hours as they work to cover the city. Spraying will occur again at 9:00pm October 2, 2018 and October 3, 2018.
