On June 5, 2018 Chief Cassell presented Officer Luke Deel his state law enforcement certification certificate. Our Police Officers must attended a 18 week academy, receive a minimum of 100 hours field training, and successfully pass a state certification test to receive their state certification. Congratulations on your achievement!! Our department is committed to having well trained and certified officers protecting our community!

On June 3, 2018, the Honaker Police Department along with the Russell County Commonwealth Attorneys Office, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Lebanon Police Department, and the Virginia State Police partnered with the Russell County Drug Coalition to help recent high school graduates see first hand the consequences of driving impaired. Graduates from Honaker, Lebanon, and Castlewood met at the Russell County Government Center in Lebanon to participate in our program “In Pursuit.” The program is designed to bring awareness to students and graduates concerned driving impaired. “It is a proactive way to teach our youth at a early age the consequences that drugs and/or alcohol can have on a future. When these young adults drive our golf cart while wearing goggles that impairs their judgement, much like alcohol and drugs, it allows them to see the tragic mistake of getting behind the wheel impaired.” Chief Cassell stated. It is the goal of law enforcement to keep our highways safe and free of impaired drivers. Not only do we want to enforce the law but we want to help others to realize the danger of getting behind the wheel of a vehicle impaired. Members of each county law enforcement agency helped to set up obstacle courses for graduates to drive through, helped administer field sobriety tests, and the commonwealth attorneys office discussed the law and penalties of driving impaired. Congratulations to all our county graduates!!! We appreciate everyone who participated in this event!!

Many throughout the public will be participating in Cannabis Week beginning today. April 20th is know as “weed day.” This is where the term 420, which is also a street name for marijuana, came from. Be warned that the Honaker Police Department will be specifically looking for those who violate the law by using and possessing marijuana. By law, it is illegal to possess marijuana in the commonwealth of Virginia. Simple possession is a Class 1 Misdemeanor which carries up to 1 year in jail and/or a $2500 fine. Over the last two weeks officers have charged several suspects with possession of marijuana and there will be a zero tolerance for those who are caught possessing, using, or distributing. Pictured below is marijuana seized from previous arrests. To help us in our efforts to rid our town of illegal drugs, anonymous tips may be called into (276) 873-5297 or you can message our Facebook page.
