We believe some clarification is needed regarding fireworks. Yes fireworks are legal in West Virginia . But not all firework types are legal. there is a defined list of legal fireworks on the West Virginia state Fire Marshal page. they are broken down into categories based on there use. Some require permits from the ATF and State fire marshal to handle and detonate. The Fireworks used in the incident earlier this week are in fact illegal and prohibited by the ATF. and Federal statute. The type used in the incident can cause damage to property and structures . Also they can cause internal injuries , dismemberment of limbs and death if detonated near people or animals. So be careful on what type of fireworks you are purchasing .All fireworks sold in West Virginia by a licensed dealer meet the state requirements for sale. Also out of state purchased fireworks may not . Another note regarding this weeks incident. If you participate in a felony being committed in this case by video tapping the incident and the type of explosive used. You can be charged with the crime that has been committed. An example would be if you are driving the car and your passengers rob a store . Then you drive them away well you just robbed a store.

On Wednesday12September2018 this department received numerous reports of explosions . In the downtown and highland hills areas of the city . On Friday 14 September 2018 . An arrest was made in this incident the charges are 5 felony count of illegal possession of an explosive device and 5 felony charges of wanton endangerment involving a destructive device . The suspect is currently in the northern regional jail awaiting arraignment and bond .

With this weekends projected rainfall totals please stay aware of your surroundings. Keep your eye on nearby small creeks and streams that can rise quickly, be prepared by moving low things to higher places in advance,NEVER EVER drive or walk into flooded areas or moving water!! It could be swifter and deeper than you think and your vehicle or you could be swept away in the current and drowning could occur quickly. If you do not have to be out on the roads stay home. Unless you have an emergency PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SHERIFF’s Department for weather updates! Stay tuned to social media, the national weather service and or your local news for updates. Any new updates I will post here as well. Please stay safe and dry, and a prayer for our officers and firefighters and crews that have to be out working in this would be appreciated.

From the National Weather Service: Good afternoon.... The Flood Watch has been expanded to cover the remainder of the NWS Pittsburgh forecast area, as you can see in the attached graphic. Rain will be heavy at times today and tonight, with slowing rain rates after sunrise on Monday. No flooding reports have been received to this point, as rain rates have not been excessive in most cases. As of this writing, one Flood Warning is in effect for portions of Preston and Garrett Counties. River Flood Watches are also in effect for numerous forecast points, particularly in the Monongahela and Ohio River basins. River forecasts will be updated later this morning.

This department routinely receives speeding complaints and traffic violation complaints in the various residential areas of the city. When this occurs an officer or officers are sent to that area to observe and validate the complaint and take the necessary action. On 31 August we have received numerous complaints of traffic violations In the Highland Hills subdivision. A officer was sent to the area a Marked police vehicle was parked in plan sight broad daylight covering two intersections. Over 25 stop sign and speeding violations where observed based on this observation it is apparent that there is a problem in the Highland Hills subdivision. Officers have been instructed that maximum enforcement of traffic violations is needed . When at a stop sign your vehicle must come to a complete stop. The wheels on your car stop rotation. Slowing and proceeding through the intersection is not acceptable and a violation. Also as a reminder all residential speed limits are 15 mph . Today's average speed on Highland Hills was between 22-27 mph. As we are sure there will be numerous comments on this post . Rest assured we are aware that Park view subdivision also suffers from this problem as well as other neighborhoods. Please slow down and stop when you are supposed to . Help us help you working together can help avoid Fines+ Court cost and points on your drivers license.

On Sunday 25 Aug 2018 at 1020 pm. We received a call of a suspicious person on West St. In the area of town known as the orchard. He was described as a tall skinny white male wearing dark clothing. Units checked the area but did not locate the person described. We have also been made aware that a social media post stated that a residence on Banfield Ave was entered sometime in the early morning hours on the same date. We are increasing patrol activity in that area. If you see any suspicious person or persons or activity please report it immediately by calling 911.You may also call the non emergency number to our department 304-527-1211 or BCSO dispatch at 304- 737 -3660 push 1 and you will be connected to a dispatcher. To protect yourself and your property we recommend using any available outside lights to illuminate your property at night . This has been proven to deter crime. offenders tend to stay away from areas that have lights and prefer to lurk in the dark areas to try avoid detection. Also we do not keep up on various social media posts. It may be days before someone makes us aware of an incident that was reported through social media. Once again please if you see something that looks suspicious or just does not feel right call the police . Report any incident no matter how small you may think it to be . Your reporting of any incidents helps us to determine if an area is showing a rise in criminal activity and aids us in directing resources to that area. Please be safe and stay vigilant in all that you do .
